NARMC Hosts CHAMPS: Area teens learn from NARMC professionals during Community Health Action in Medi

This summer, 19 teenagers from Boone County spent time learning about their community and particularly the healthcare field. North Arkansas Regional Medical Center (NARMC) hosted students involved in Community Health Action in Medical Public Service (CHAMPS).

CHAMPS is a program provided by the North Arkansas Partnership for Health Education (NAPHE) in collaboration with NARMC for eighth through tenth grade students.

“We believe that community outreach is an integral part of our purpose here at NARMC,” Clinical Educator Ruth Sims said. “Children are the NARMC community of tomorrow.”

NARMC’s goal is to introduce students to various departments throughout the hospital so that they have an idea what type of careers are available in the healthcare industry.

During their time at NARMC, students heard from the Education, Lab, Pharmacy and Radiology departments.

NARMC nursing staff taught the students how to take blood pressure during a hands-on activity. Students learned from NARMC’s top-notch staff and were able to practice on each other. This practical skill and understanding of blood pressures is just the beginning of what hopefully will be a long career in healthcare for these young students.

Located in Harrison, Arkansas, NARMC is a 176-bed hospital and medical system with a team of 800 dedicated healthcare professionals. The medical center is committed to providing the best in care, close to home for residents of Boone, Marion, Newton, Searcy and Carroll counties. One of the Top 100 rural hospitals according to The Rural Health Policy Institute, NARMC has numerous 5-star ratings from Healthgrade and scores in the 98th percentile for patient satisfaction in the Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Ratings.
